Does anyone know where its possible to purchase the electoral roll for the
UK (or at least just England)? I know individual councils sell it for their
area, but does any organisation sell or provide it for all of the UK or
England?

TIA.

Something like this -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ICD-Publishing-Info-V13-Pro/dp/B000PJ3T22

There are quite a few companies who provide on-line searches as well

Thanks for this Greg. I was thinking for something that I could import into
a database and do my own interrogations on. Using third party software or
applications wouldn't fit in with my requirement - well, actually its a
colleagues requirement - but the need is to be able to dump these to a
database allowing various ad-hoc queries to be run.

You might want to look at something like QuickAddress from QAS -
http://www.qas.co.uk/index.htm

The organisation I work for use this with an intranet front end to
allow people to interrogate the data.

Thanks Greg. Unfortunately the project need is the reverse, a health
authority wants to be able to target people in specific geographic areas and
would prefer to personalise the mailshots hence the desire to extract names
from addresses. For addresses we already have PAF, but no names to go with
them. (Yes there are issues such as the mail preference service, etc, but
that's the requirement on the table.)
