Hello Everyone,
I am doing some preliminary research for an article on the continued
use of ArcView 3.x software among GIS professionals. Do you still use
ArcView 3.3 in any form? If so, do you also use ArcGIS software or is
ArcView 3.x your only GIS software? If you are also using any version
of ArcGIS (ArcView or ArcInfo 9.x), for what purposes do you still use
ArcView 3.x? For those that only use ArcView 3.x, why is that your
own software and do you ever plan to migrate to ArcGIS?
Thanks,
Caitlin

A bit of a non-question. If you use Windows XP or later, you don't
have a choice; Arcview 3.x won't work on these platforms. Some people
claim to have made it work, but I understand that is with reduced
functionality, as not all the extensions work. No-one should be using
it for mission-critical work, as it is unsupported. The only reason
for keeping it going is if you have functionality written in Avenue
that you don't have the resources to migrate to VBA.

Hmmmm...I have used 3.2 on a computer with XP Pro without any
problems. In fact 3.2 runs and processes much quicker than 9.1.
I use arcview 3.3 and ArcGIS 9.2 on the same machine, no problem.

I am surprised; other people on this newsgroup have reported
difficulties in installing ArcView 3.x on Windows XP, and it is also
the experience of colleagues of mine. I also inderstand that even if
you can get the main program running, there are extensions that simply
will not work.
Anyway, this is all pretty much moot - as I said before, ArcView3.x is
unsupported and for that reason alone unsuitable for new projects.
Incidentally, I personally continue to use ARC/INFO Workstation, which
I regard as quicker, more powerful and more stable than ArcView or
ArcGIS!
