I figured out what was needed. My question now is: Do I create a new
direction raster from the filled raster.... or do I have to use the
same flow direction raster I used for my original DEM?

You must used the "filled" one... otherwise water will not flow, so
accumulation would be zero downstream of a hole and therefore you
couldn't identify the river.
