Hi

Can anyone tell me where I can find a database of latitudes and
longitudes for cities and towns of the world? Not just the US or Europe
but the whole world. Are there any freely available list?

Thanks

Hi,

Do you want just a single lat/lon point for each, or the geocoding for the
city/town boundaries?

If it's the former, http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gclookup seems to have the
latitudes, longitudes *and altitudes* of just about every airport in the
world. The folks who run that site might be prepared to provide the data to
get you started.

Cheers

Check out http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html . This provides
a geographic names database for the world (all non-US). The
geoprocessing function being supported by this application is also
known as a Gazetteer. There are a number of on-line Gazy's The nice
aspects of this (and other publicly available) gazetteer is that the
place names are kept up to date and you can also download via FTP the
actual database with locations.
