Greetings,

We are doing a project that involves mapping and it would be immensely
useful to locate a source for shape files. In particular, shape files
describing the world, countries, states within countries, their
boundaries, and so forth. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

www.ibge.gov.br has good information for brasil.
most files in shp or dgn.

check the link called Geoci=EAncias and then Cartografia.
