Are there any free online geocoding services where I could enter an
address, get the lat/lon, then use the results for commercial purposes?

If not, what is the going price per geocode for commercial services? I
would probably need around 5,000 geocodes, and I'd much rather pay
per-geocode vs. purchasing TeleAtlas or NavTeq data (far beyond my tiny
budget).

Thanks very much.

Here are a couple of online pay sites -

Also, have a look at this free offering http://www.batchgeocode.com/
- it uses Yahoo's Geocoding service.

Additionally ESRI is jumping into the ring with Google Maps and
creating an advanced internet portal for geocoding from uploaded
spreadsheets, FREE.

I saw a product demo in the fall and it was in Beta, very impressive
drag drop interface, perhaps later this year.

You might try the one we've created at USC - https://webgis.usc.edu . It's
free, you just have to sign up and put a link somewhere on your site back
to us. You can process databases on the site or use the API from your
scripts.
