ERSI has come out with an add-on for AutoCAD 2007 which I've
installed. The key features are here:
http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-autocad/about/features.html .

Question: Where can I find links to (ArcGIS) map servers? The idea is
to plug in a known server address - seems to expect and link to an xml
file - and the map will be downloaded/updated inside AutoCAD.

http://geodata.gov has a comprehensive list of map servers. You can do
an advanced search of "geographic services" and your area of interest.
EPA also has a good collection of geodata accesible through web
services. check out their instructions here http://geodata.epa.gov/help.htm

Similarly a search for "web services" or "ArcIMS server" in your
country or region can help you find the servers.
