I've been trying for two months to get 1 sec SRTM data
for Canada. USGS says NIMA or NASA. NIMA says they have it,
but need release from NASA. NASA has it, but don't have
contact information on their web page that I've found other then
a general purpose address for public inquiries.

That one I've sent 3 messages to, and gotten no results.

Does anywone know who to ask to get the 1 second tile
corresponding to 114d 17' W and 53d 20' N?

(I need 2 meter relative accuracy on 30m grid to show shapes of gently
rolling terrain. (<20 m total relief away from the river and ravines.)
Object is to teach kids how to relate contours to the shape of the
hills.)

You should talk to Tom Farr at NASA

tom.farr@jpl.nasa.gov

But why not just use the data now available from 1:50K topo maps. This data
is available from Geogratis I believe.

Why not get Canadian data from Canada? ;-)

53d 20'N 114d 17'W is located in Alberta, northwest of
Telfordville, south of the North Saskatchewan River.
It's contained within the 1:50,000 NTS mapsheet 83G08.

The CDED1(Canadian Digital Elevation Data, Level 1)
data to cover 83G08 at both 0.75 and 3 arcseconds is
available from the Geobase website:
http://www.geobase.ca/

You can see visual comparisons of various DEM resolutions,
including CDED, SRTM, GTOPO, etc. on the "Dem Comparisons"
page on my website:
