Hi all,

I've been googling a bit about GIS, but I found that althought there
are alot of free tools and free to use GIS data, I didn't find any
trully free GIS data that you can download and use.

Is there such thing as publicly maintained and contributed GIS data
like wikipedia to encyclopedia?

Thanks

If you're looking for data in the U.S., there's actually piles
and piles of free data. The hard part is knowing where to look.

Now, if you're not from the U.S. or you're interested in non-U.S.
data, then yeah, your options are a lot more limited.

Cheers,
John

Hi,

Although not publically contributed, the VMAP0 (worldwide) and the
VMAP1 (Selective) are good public domain datasets. This data is in VPF
format, so you might need a converter to make it easy to use, such as
OGR2OGR, which probably can be used to convert .vpf to .shp data.

Openstreetmap is a publically maintained and contributed project.

http://www.geographynetwork.com/ is maintained by ESRI

There is also maproom.psu.edu

You might also try the 'shoreline extractor' at
http://rimmer.ngdc.noaa.gov/coast/
