I'm having a minor problem with Mapsource and was wondering if anyone
can suggest good workarounds or alternatives.

Basically I want to edit the waypoints on my 60csx (changing the
symbols, or names, or comments, etc.) to reorganize things. The
problem I've noticed is that when I upload the edited waypoints back
to the gps, it won't overwrite the old points, it renames the new
ones, so I end up with duplicate entries. So far the only workaround
I've found is to go onto the GPS, delete all waypoints, then upload
the edited ones. (And I should probably add in routes to the whole
download/erase/upload cycle to avoid messing those up.)

At a minimum it would be nice if there was a way to do this delete
from Mapsource, but I haven't found one. But for what I'm doing now,
I'm only using Mapsource as a waypoint editor . . . so if anyone can
recommend a good third party waypoint editor that will accomplish all
this better than mapsource (and preferably for OS X, but I could live
with a WIndows program) let me know. Thanks.

MapSource never overwrite waypoints when there are already waypoints
with the same name there. I don't think there is any way to change that
behavior.

Every once in a while I download the tracks, waypoints, and routes and
save them to a file to back them up. When I download them their lose
the icons that I had assigned to them on the GPS (I have a 76Cx). When
I download them they wind up assigned to no category and having the
black square dot icon from the "marker" icon set.

On the GPS I like to use the icons (symbols) to sort the waypoints into
two groups. One group for marine use, the other for everything else so
on the GPS so I don't have to look through about 4,000 waypoints used in
boating to see the other icons.

So while I have the data in MapSource, I save it all as downloaded, then
delete the tracks, then recategorized the waypoints into two categories
and change the waypoint icons back to the two icons (symbols) I like to
use. I also get rid of unwanted waypoints and routes, clean or change
waypoint names and do some other basic admin work like that. Then I
save the edited data to a MapSource *.gdb file for a backup.

Then I delete all the waypoints from the GPS (it only takes a few
seconds (press Find, Enter, Menu, choose Delete, press Enter, choose All
Symbols, press Enter, choose Yes, press Enter again).

Deleting all the waypoint also deletes all the routes. Then I upload
the waypoints and routes to the GPS from MapSource and am back where I
started with it all updated.

There is a good collection of third party applications for doing that
with here, including a couple for the Mac:

http://gpsinformation.net/#3rdparty

I've used several of those for the PC, I finally registered GPS Utility
and found that I preferred that over MapSource for editing routes and
waypoints.

GPS Utility, like MapSource does not do well at preserving the waypoint
icons (symbols) as they are downloaded and uploaded. But the blame on
that lies with Garmin. Garmin keeps changing the icon families around
by assigning varying families of symbols to different GPS models. When
they do that they stir up the symbol number/assigned icons
relationships and create yet another different/partially unique symbol
set. No one seems to be able to understand or deal with it all, even
Garmin and Mapsource.

If someone took the trouble publish lists of all the symbol sets you
could probably find enough assignments that are the same in all the sets
and , by using those, wrest control of symbol assignments from the
programmers at Garmin.

Make that 400, not 4,000. I don't know what happened there.

Mapsource is a good source of maps, as told by its name, but there are far
better waypoint editors and track analysis tools. I recommend Gartrip,
please have a look at its features at www.gartrip.de or
www.gartrip.de/func.htm

Anyway, even Gartrip cannot delete the waypoints in the GPS receiver. The
Garmin transfer protocol does not support any deleting function, so you'll
find no program doing that. I agree with you that this would be a very nice
basic option, but there is no chance.
