I purchased a Nuvi 1300 late December 2009. I updated the maps. This
GPS was damaged in an accident. Prior to that I had backed up the files
to my PC. I am planning to buy a reconditioned Nuvi 1490T that does not
come with a map update. Is it possible to copy the backup Nuvi 1300 Map
files to the Nuvi 1490T?

Thanks you

Jim

No. The map is "unlocked" to the serial number of the device it was licensed
for. Garmin maps are currently non-transferrable between units.

You might be able to sweet-talk a Garmin rep to doing it/providing an unlock
code, but that's a long shot.

Do however keep in mind that the 1490 I don't think has been out too long so
it may already have a map as new as your 1300 had.

Not directly--Seth has noted the reason in his response. However, the
1300's map image file could be 'unlocked' so that it would work on the
1490T--and many other Garmin units but not all though--using the tool at:

Note that this 'unlocking' method may work now, but not so sure with
future Garmin software update releases that are starting to implement
the new authentication scheme. Use at your own discretion as always.
It would be good to backup the original map file that comes with the
1490T just in case.

Jim, unless their policy has changed - again - Garmin reconditioned GPS
units have the same update policy as their new units. I bought a
reconditioned unit last year and, upon receipt, learned that there was a
newer version map available for it. Registered it on-line and got the
free updated maps.

Do it within 60 days of it's first acquisition of a fix by satellite and
you should be good to go. Just make sure that you're getting a
factory-reconditioned unit and not some guy buffing and polishing the
case in a garage somewhere<g>

I don't know what you mean by the next 1490T doesn't come with the map
upgrade. Do you mean lifetime map upgrading plan?

But I probably can give you the general answer.

1. NO you can't transfer the lincensed from one GPS unit to other. Or the
map is tied to the specific unit.

2. YES, you can install the same map to as many GPS units as you wish, but
only the one(s) with licensed key will work.

3. The Nuvi 1490T doesn't come with free lifetime map upgrading plan *BUT*
just like all Garmin GPSes, you have 1 FREE upgrade to current version.

        a. Within 60 days by Garmin policy

        b. More than 60 days by your personal decision, or by the time you
                 REGISTER your GPS.

In the past, someone registered after more than a year. Garmin won't chew
your behind for this.
