Does anybody know of a way to put a Garmin handgeld GPS into mass
storage mode remotely? I'm working on a program to manage POI's for
aeronautical data and I want to be able to send it to the unit without
having to manually put it into mass storage mode via the GPS menus.
Mapsource and POILoader can cause the unit to automatically receive
data without any intervention at the GPS end, of course, but I need a
simple command line utility or even maybe just a dll I can call to let
me see it as a drive.

If I recall correctly, my nivi 255W shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer
when connected to my WIN XP computer via the USB cable.

I have never tried especially the GPS. but I believe there are several
programs allowing you to transfer and even work on the remoted system via
internet or modem.
Since most newer GPSes act as an external storage device, so I believe all
you need to do is.
1. Connect the GPS to a remoted computer
2. Install the special program allowing you to run the remote computer
And that's all you need to do, and GOOGLE is your best friend.

That isn't the OP's problem.
I've got a Garmin Vista HCx, it does indeed have a mass storage mode,
but AFAIK, you have to manually switch it to this mode from the GPS unit
itself, there doesn't seem to be a away to do this from the computer.
This is the problem the OP has

Correct. I'm not working with a remote computer (not for this project
anyway); I'm just trying to send a .gpi file to the data card without
user intervention on the GPS receiver side.
