You can also keep more than one map-compilation on your SD cards. Just
rename the gmapsupp.img filenames as you create them to something
identifiable for what they contain. Then when needed, rename them back to
gmapsupp.img. Or keep them in individual descriptively named folders and
just move them to the /Garmin/ folder as needed. My GPS uses Micro-SD cards
so I also carry with a very small MP3 player with RockBox installed on it
as my file-naming and file-manipulation tool. Taking the Micro-SD from my
GPS unit and putting it into my RockBoxed MP3 player to rename files as
needed. Here's a copy of my "index.txt" file that I keep on an 8GB
Micro-SDHC card along with all the included files named. (TXT files are
also viewable through MP3 players with RockBox installed, as well it being
able to view the JPG mapping-region images I created for visual
references).
-----index.txt-------------
The GPS unit can only understand ONE
"gmapsupp.img" file at a time.
Rename these to gmapsupp.img when
needed. Then rename back to suggested
file name listed here when choosing
to use another as your main maps.

Generally it's a 2025 map-tile (blocks) limitation, a few newer high-end
units can go higher, to something like 4000 map-tiles or something like
that. All that happens is that you won't be able to see any of those map
segments on your device for any map compilation that has gone over its tile
limit.

They still sell 4GB SD (non-SDHC) cards. These were a type of hybrid
invented to circumvent earlier 2GB-max limitations of non-SDHC devices.
Even though your device might claim to only use up to 2GB SD cards, these
cards allow you to use 4GB. You will not, however, be able to use the 8GB
SDHC cards or higher, as they are SDHC only. When buying 4GB cards for your
2GB-max device just be sure they are labeled as 4GB-SD, and not 4GB-SDHC.
These 4GB-SD cards are quite popular with many camera owners. Finding that
if formatted in FAT16 instead of FAT32, it can increase their read and
write speeds up to 30% over their stated rates. Use this FAT16 formatting
speed-increase tweak with caution, some devices will not support FAT16
formats and might lead to data corruption or general incompatibility.

So don't damage the card. They're built fairly tough, and I've never had
one lose anything short of someone dunking my camera in the Carribean
and "forgetting" to tell me.

Nope. Map data is read from the card, not copied onto the unit. If you
have to slots, you can put a music-laden card in the OTHER one. (But
frankly, the media player leave a fair amount to be desired; It's better
than nothing in a rental car, but there's far better solutions for your
own vehicle.

Hi
Now I made a test:
Plugged in the North America NT SD Card in the SD- Slot
switched on the Zumo with default Europa NT already inside.
and saw in Cardinfo:
1.) North America NT 2010
2.) Europe NT 2008
plugged out the North America SD-card during running of the Zumo:
North America NT disappear Europe switches to place 1.)
1.) Europe NT 2008
plugged again in the North America SD-Card during running of the Zumo:
North America appears after few seconds again on place 1 and Europe
is shifted to place two:
1.) North America NT 2010
2.) Europe NT 2008
So I can plug SD-cards out and in and in and out in my Zumo
during it is running without any problem.
So you are right, It is not possible to run additional maps
from SD card by loading it directly in the Zumo
If you want to have a free SD Slot AND an additional map
for my understanding you must not buy the SD-card variant
but the SW-download variant of the additional map. Both ways
are announced on the Garmin page but without explaining this
behaviour.
Comments?

You understanding is correct. Map data purchased on SD cards stays
with the card. Map data that is downloaded is tied to the particular
unit it is downloaded for. If you purchase a download thing at some
kind of store, then what you actually receive is a code that pays for
a download. (I BELIEVE that the downloaded file is actually marked for
the receiver internally, and that you can make backups of the file in
case your receiver needs to be fully reset, AND that you can load that
alternatively load that data onto an SD card in your receiver, in which
case since it's still "downloaded data" it will both go away from the
unit when you removed the card and it will be locked such that it can
only be used with that specific receiver.

How could that work? I think they will not mark a special SW for you.
I see that you get an downloadcode and you are able to download the
files into your unit.
After downloading the file in the Unit, you must make another
validation for to "free" the downloaded SW in your unit.
For that you must connect the unit online. Correct?
In this moment garmin has all information it needs
Download code, SW internal number and HW Serial number.
I belive in this moment your HW Serial number Your SW internal Number
and your downloadcode will me merged in the server of garmin and no
other unit can load down this SW via this specific downloadcode anymore.
But this I do not know because I never buyed a SW downlod from Garmin.
But I am nearly shure, that there is no "special individual Number" burned
in the SW related to yout HW.
If it would be so, then it would be not nessecary to "free" the initial SW
on the unit after buying it new, but you have to do that.

If I had an "downloaded SW, how could I copy this from inside my unit to
the SD Card? Show me the way step by step I will try this with my next
Garmin Map what I buy. But I think you are not able to copy that downloaded
SW to anywhere. If you have to cold reset the unit, than you are obliged
to do again another download of your lost additional downloaded SW without
any problem because the garmin server knows you, your downloaded SW
and at least the HW Serial Number, but only if you made your SW "free" before.
BUT, If you did not "free" your SW after downloading it from the garmin
Server, before doing a cold reset on your unit, the garmin server is not
shure about your HW serial Number and that means you will not be able
to download again with the same download code your earlier already
downloaded SW oncemore. Thats why they force you to "free" your SW.
To be shure about your unit number.
This is my thinking here.
