I suppose it's worth a try. I know that all devices are not created
equal but I've never had a problem with the Garmin 2610, The Nuvi 760,
or the Quest I in the SAME vehicle.

That's the problem with these erratic, occasional problems. One must
make sure the planets are in the proper alignment, the humidity and
temperature in range, the moon in the proper phase, etc. <g>

I'm going to run it for a bit without entering the home location into it
and see what happens. Recently it seems to have been occurring a bit
more frequently. We'll see.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You are absolutely correct with what you say here, and I killed a
number of 12V to 5V USB converters on the motorbike and in the car.

However, none of my Garmin units ever reacted to this kind of trouble.

Sounds odd. I had a similiar feature on my zumo - in some areas it
would crash in the middle of a drive, and I needed to get the battery
out to get it back to life.

The cause finally was a corrupted file system in the zumo, affecting
the map. How I realized: Tried to copy all data via USB from the zumo
to the PC. Including maps. Result was that the big map file wouldn't
copy at all. I believe that was caused by the first crash due to
faulty firmware.

Solution: Format the zumo in USB mode, then copy all files back that
were present. Finally, re-create the mapset in MapSource and transfer
it to the zumo. Took 2 hours as usual. Last step is to rename the map
file from gmapsup.img to gmapprom.img using Windows Explorer. It never
crashed since.

Maybe its worth a try even if you could copy the map file. And it is
worthwhile to read the nuvi tricks at

(may need to use a translator, they are in German)
