I have an in-warranty nuvi 765T in my car that has crashed several time
- more so since the last firmware/software update (sorry, don't have the
current version numbers handy).
What will happen is this: Unit works just fine, powers down when car is
turned off, powers up fine when I return.
Occasionally, however, when I return to the car and turn on the ignition
the unit will begin to power up but never make it. I'll witness the
green bar crawling across the screen and the logo below it, "loading
maps" and when the green bar is within a gnat's ass of the right side of
the screen, the unit blacks out, and reboots. This endless cycle will
continue until I remove power from the unit.
I was on hold with the tech folks at Garmin for almost an hour before I
gave up. Also send them an e-mail on their site and that too has been
ignored (starting to get somewhat pissed since I've owned or owned eight
of their units).
The only way - short term - that I've found to cure this is to do a hard
reset. That gets me back in business but also removes my personal
settings. PITA.
Question to the group... does anyone have any idea what may be causing
this? I'm leaning towards a software/firmware bug (aka "undocumented
feature<g>) in the last update but... if memory serves, I think I did
experience this or something similar once before. That time I "cured"
it by removal of the unit from the car mount, bringing it in the house
overnight and firing it up again in the morning.
I have time to play and follow suggestions as the warranty has another
eight months or so to run.
Thanks in advance.

My 785 did that. It did it when at home, and I had home address programmed
in as 'home'.
A hard reset deletes 'home' so it would work. Home is the only place this
happened. If I didn't have 'home' programmed in, no problems.

Thanks, Louie. I had "Home" programmed in but if I'm reading your post
correctly, you're saying that the problem only occurred when you booted
up and happened to be at "Home."
The instances I've experienced, while one occasion I know of definitely
occurred at home, have been pretty much location independent, i.e. they
happen anywhere I happen to be with no specific frequency, etc.
If push comes to shove, I'll leave home location unprogrammed (though I
do like the feature when I'm down in the south suburbs of Chicago, etc.
as a quick way to get me on track to home in the quickest fashion).
AAMOF, I don't think I've reprogrammed "Home" since the last crash
recovery. Maybe I'll just leave it be and see what happens.

What I did was put my home address in as a favorite, and I had no more
problems.....well no more of that specific problem.
A little later in my 785's life I had the ''shut off and won't power on''
problems; addressed here -

I sent the unit in and got another... works fine
good luck

Not sure if this is a solution.
Electronic devices do not like power surges, power dips, or "dirty"
power sources.
When a device is left plugged into your car and you start your car up,
that device, depending on its design,
might be subjected to power surges and dips as most of the power is busy
trying to start the car.
This can result in electronics products like GPS getting their brains
scrambled.
Unplug the GPS from it's power vehicle power source, start the vehicle,
then plug it back in.
See if that helps. It might help. It may not help.
