Hello All,
I recently downloaded the Nuvi 660 firmware upgrade from the Garmin site to
upgrade to v2.70. I did this as I read some other comments that the
webupdater application has (in some cases) caused corruption.
I ran the firmware update as per the instructions from the Garmin website
and two .bin files copied to the unit but the third file (I can't recall the
extension) failed to copy with a file in use error. I could not work out a
way to recover from this as the upgrade failed (not fully complete) and the
only option was to reset the unit via the power button.
When the unit came back up again the following error came up on the screen:
system software missing
The Nuvi would not boot!
I contacted the local Garmin support rep on (02) 9844 6666 and I was given
the following sequence to recover from this condition:
1. Power off the unit.
2. HOLD down the power button and you will see "Pre Boot Mode" appear on the
lower part of the display. KEEP HOLDING the power button down and the
display will flicker, do this until the pre boot mode message disappears.
This seems to take a long time (60 seconds at least).
3. Once the pre boot mode message disappears release the power button and
your device will perform some activites to recover from the above problem.
i tried the above 4 time and the same fault apperier on the start up screen.
has any one had the same fault.
steve
Just TRY this instead of step 2:
2: Hold finger on top right of touch screen and turn on the unit using the
power button.
(Causes a different boot sequence in the Nuvi 310, but don't know if it will
work with the 660)
Cheers!
Hi martin
I tried all of the below and got the same error. system software missing.
Any more things to try.

Steve-
If you connect the Nuvi to your computer with the USB cable, does it
appear as a drive on your computer?
If you have an SD card in the Nuvi, it should also appear as a drive on
your computer. Copy the update's Garmin folder to it. The GUPDATE.GCD
file should be contained in it, as well as the two .bin files. Then put
away (eject) the Nuvi and the SD card from your computer and turn on the
Nuvi. If everything goes right, it should begin the update process
again. Be sure to give it time.
I think actual updating may not be completed until you turn off the
Nuvi, remove the SD card and turn it back on again. At least you can
see what happens. It may just boot up normally.
If you get this far, you might want to manually re-copy the two .bin
files into the Garmin folder on your Nuvi, just to be sure they really
were copied in the first attempt. (They have the same names as the
original files they replace.)
