Hello All

Just got a new Nuv 500 and connected to an ac outlet to charge,
maybe someone can shed some light here, I read the owners manual, and I
cannot find anything where I can check to see if the unit is charging,
when I connected the plug in the Nuvi 500 an icon came up on the bottom
of the screen showing I am connected to a computer. is that right, the
power cord is from my wife's Garmin 655 which has the same 5v output
mini plug.

Assuming the 655 cord really does work in yours, try tapping the screen
during "charge" mode to see if such a message appears on the screen. If not,
it may not be charging. ?

really - is there such a message or display ?

Each Nuvi seems to have a slightly different version of hidden diags that
"might" be accessed.
Here is one from my Nuvi 255 -
Turn it on... using battery power.
Press and hold the Battery icon for about 10 secs -
the tech screen "might" display.
If so - you can see the battery info - mine shows - Ok Cap -
Now - plug in your USB cable, and it "might" change to show - Battery
Charging.
If you press Exit - the Nuvi returns to the normal menu - missing the
battery icon.
You can merely press the menu screen area for 10 secs
where the battery icon would normally appear to get back to the tech screen.
This also works when using the car adapter and the battery icon is not
displayed.

On my 350 there is. But the 350 is old technology. ;-) It came with an ac
adapter as well as the USB cord.

If it goes the the screen showing it connected to a computer it is seeing
power from the USB cable or charge cable and is charging. If you go to the
tech screen as noted in another post you will see the status of the battery.
plug in the power cable and it will show battery current. Other wise there
is nothing that tells you directly it is charging.
