Leaving for Haiti soon, I need something that will give me gps
coordinates that I can send to others.

Currently have a Motorola Q9h that has a gps chip, but I can't find
any software that will give me coordinates. I don't need maps.

If I need to buy a new device, optimally it will give me the gps
location and have the ability to store locations for later transfer to
pc for upload. lacking any storage capability, bluetooth or wired usb
transfers a must.

Lots of possible answers to this one.
There is a free activator aka "kickstart" app for your phone that will
activate the GPS so that you can use programs like Google maps and Live
Search - info here:

You couldn't go far wrong going to Walmart and grabbing one of the less
expensive Garmin handhelds such as an eTrex Vista or Venture for between
100 and 150 USD. These will all store a fair number of waypoints and
tracks which you can then read off the screen or upload to your PC.

Your cause is compelling enough that you could probably get someone nearby,
perhaps in this group, to contribute their old GPS.

There are gsm phones on the market that have a geotacking feature. That
is they store the geo coordinates in the info with the picture you take
with the phone. Send the picture and they also have the coordinates.

I wouldn't expect Haiti to have a reliable working gsm network up.
- Daft expectation for any disaster senario. Map and compass would be more
useful.

Otherwise just use a basic (yes plain) handheld GPS (any, pick your flavour).
And take lots of batteries/ability to recharge etc
on you own.
My old etrex vista would get packed for me - but it isn't the most economical on
batteries.

in practice a gsm network is often very fast restored in these kind of
circumstances because of the communication need for all help teams. A
simple generator will often do the job.
