Well, as my County has a part-time GIS/tax Map person that probably
will/can/should do this for me why am I try to do it?!?!
Our State parks requires all of our snomo trail be GPS but will
only accept the date as GIS Shape files.
sooo as I have a Garmin (Rino 530 HCx) that is of course (or off
course??) not a simple thing to accomplish!
Looked like Minnesota's DRNGamin can do it: But no! all it ever
gives is a MSCOMM32.OCX error.
Well the NYS cratagraphigor (sp??) (map maker) says use ARCGIS
Explorer Desktop free! well that worked for all of 2 times then
nothing but crashes!! AND when I saved as there were No Options for
any of the several shapefiles needed
also said that ARCGIS Explorer Desktop online would do it: But no
way to add any GPS files to that!!
Hours and hours!!
Yes Yes - I have NO IDEA what I'm talking about! Nothing new!
Why doesn't Garmin just offer a utility or such to convert to
Shapefiles?!?
Oh well. Map Source has less and less as it improves.
Deloriam Topo might do it - but I'm not paying $100

You could try QGIS. http://www.qgis.org/
Its free. It can import GPX tracks, then save as shapefiles.

Or maybe try uDIG or OpenJUMP, other free GIS software:
