I wonder if Garmin realizes that having to download your maps over the
internet is a deal-breaker for most people?

I live in an area that does not have 3G in most places, and no coverage
at all in some.

I am very willing to sacrifice a few gigs for offline maps. I've used
their Windows Mobile app, and that is how it works. It's just a Nuvi
app. I've had a Garmin hand held for years, so having maps is not a
problem for me, and also most people don't realize that you can get
Garmin-compatible auto-routing maps from Open Source Map for free anyhow.

You can buy Garmin maps on DVD or SD card all over the place.
Downloading is a convenience, not a requirement.

Yes, but you misunderstand. Garmin's new iPhone app ONLY downloads maps
off the internet, there is no way (that I know) to buy maps and transfer
them to an iPhone.

Where's the SD slot in iPhone? Besides, downloading on demand in many cases
is a very big inconvenience, even more so travelling abroad.

Judging by the availability of an SD card reader adapter for the iPhone,
I'd guess, as an non-iPhone user that the iPhone does not have an inbuilt
SD card reader.

Ah, this link confirms no SD card reader on the iPhone4...
