I have been a loyal Garmin user for 15 to 20 yrs (since my GPS 45
days). I have gone through many generations and recently gave my Nuvi
755t to my daughter and retired my iQue 3600. I purchased the high
end 3790t (about $400ish) and still own an etrex vista CX.

In the last two weeks for non GPS reasons I now also have/own an
iPhone 4.

Now I have been having various problems with the 3790t from day one
the major problem being its inability to recognize movements between a
multilane divided highway like an Interstate and its service road. So
for example, if I have an active route on the Interstate and move to
the service road, it continues to insist I am on the interstate. My
older units did not do this. The 3790t also makes quite a few
recommended 'silly routes' (totally useless turns versus just going
straight, for example). Garmin cartography has been relatively
unresponsive.

So I am now at the point trying to decide whether to sell the 3790t on
ebay and then either (1) getting a navigation app for my iPhone 4
and/or (2) updating the maps on the etrex and using it in the car
instead of an iPhone app.

Not sure the added value of the 3790 is worth continuing to use it
(versus selling it used).

P.S. - the traffic the 755t and 3790t uses is reasonably unreliable
compared to the ones I am seeing on the iPhone. At least on the 755t
it told you the number of minutes of delay on the main screen, the
3790 does not - you have drill down and add them up manually.

Any suggestions for a reasonably good iPhone app to sub for the
Garmin? Or should I hang in there and hope Garmin fixes the 3790
which is supposed to be their high end Nuvi. Or I can just use the
etrex in my ram-mount and suction cup.

99%+ of my time is driving in Houston metro area.

You stand a better chance of getting a reply here if you repost using a
different net-name. Though Joel is a fine name, there is a history attached
to that name in this newsgroup.

Look around...

I purchased the TomTom App for my iPhone 3GS (Cost around $40.00) This
gives me GPS availability wherever I may be; eg: someone else's car,
etc). While I am quite happy with my Garmin Nuvi 350, this is very handy
since my iPhone is always with me. Another advantage of this is that
updates are automatic at no additional cost. Although I prefer the
Garmin interface, the TomTom app for the iPhone is very handy.

Let's hope the OP notices this reply.

OP: please notice the reply from mortman; I think it sounds useful to you.

My cell is Android, and the built-in capabilities are quite nice. I have
also seen favorable reports on the TomTom App for the iPhone.

OTOH, I use a Garmin Nuvi 1490 for in-vehicle use, even though I have a
suction mount for my phone. I plan to try the phone eventually, but for now
I don't have any experience to contribute to his thread.

Did notice and thanks all. And sorry but name is what it is (from
should differentiate). I don't post here very often so I don't expect
there will be much confusion.
