+ You're buying it used, right? If the deal includes maps, make sure
ownership of the maps / registration of the device is transferred to
you - I'm not sure how Garmin handles this, but it is something to
think of and discuss / elucidate with the owner.

+ The manual is available here, which could help familiarizing you in
advance with the device:

http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP60CSx_OwnersManual.pdf

+ Check this page to see what originally came included in the box:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=310#inTheBoxTab

(The "basemap" item is just the basic map preloaded on the device, not
a physical item. The other ones are)

+ Basic tests: make sure you're outside - ideally not in a "city
canyon"

- turn unit on by holding the ON key for a few seconds. Wait for it
to initialize - it should go to the "Acquiring Satellites" page.

- Briefly press the ON key - the backlight slider should show up -
press the ON key again to toggle between backlight ON/OFF/in between.
With the backlight slider visible, press the UP and DOWN keys on the
rocker switch to adjust the intensity of the backlight.

- Wait until the unit has a fix - this can last a while if it has
traveled hundreds of miles, or spent a long time without batteries in
a drawer. The first fix should not last longer than 20 minutes or so,
the second one should be much faster.

- Turn the unit off by holding the ON key.

- Release all keys, then hold ENTER, then ON, and keep them held until
you see the diagnostics screen. The keys, beeper, and compass can be
evaluated here. Press every key once - for each one, you should see a
white circle turn black.

Press PAGE - additional diagnostics screen should show enabling you to
see pixel errors on the display.

Regards,
Gilles.

If memory serves these pages have been there in one form or another
since my first Garmin, an eMap. Probably first heard / read about them
here from Joe Mehaffey, Dale de Priest or Jack Yeazel - check out e.g.
this page http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/secret.htm

Gilles.
