Hi,

I might get a used 60csx from someone here in town. I've never used
one before (or a handheld gps in general). What' the checklist of
things i should go through to make sure eerything's working right?

Thanks

I have a 76CSx which is functional equivalent to a 60. If you aren't
familiar with them it's going to be difficult for you to assess the
units functionality, at least IMO. These units have aLOT of
capabilities. Trail, road, water navigation capabilities (assuming the
appropriate mapsets have been loaded). Routing, logging, and on and on...

I'm really not trying to be a wisea** but honestly the best preparation
would probably be to read the manual and try to get a better feel of
what the unit is capable of.

All that said, I think it's either going to work, or not. If it
acquires he satellites, displays the map, etc chances are you're good
to go.

I tend to agree with Steve. I bought a 76CSx on eBay and it works fine.
Since it is from somebody identifiable by you...you always have the
complaint resource.
My suggestion (FYI & this group) would be to:
follow Steve's advice:
a) see that it acquires satellites in an orderly fashion.
b) take it for a short drive using the Map Page (usually pushing the page
button does that) and see that it is showing your progress

then (if all seems OK-- as in Steve's & my case):

a) ask what supplemental map(s) are installed.
b) ask what microSD data card is installed (if any)

e deal includes maps, make sure
ownership of the maps / registration of the device is transferred to
you

why is this important (transfer registration of device/maps)?

The maps are locked to the device. To e.g. take advantage of upgrade
offers, you have to own them and possess the right serial codes and
unlocking codes and ids and passwords and whatever else the paranoid
cryptographers at Garmin invented :-)

Also, Garmin in the past (I think they changed this) allowed you to
install some maps on _two_ of their devices. Something to be aware of
if you buy the maps along with the device: you are entitled to a free
install on another device - unless the seller intended to keep that
license for the device he upgraded to ...

Gilles.
