Looking for a hand held Garmin GPS, something I can use in my car and
especially when I go off road with my motorcycle, some say the Garmin
60cx or the 76 CSX don't know about either of them, but am I on the
right track, if not what would be a good choice for my application.

I use a 76 CSx on both my dirt bike and my 4x4 truck. It is great in
my opinion. It does not come with detailed maps you will need to buy
them if you want it to do routing when using it in the car. There are
a few sites where you can download maps also. 60 and 76 are the
same systems just a different form factor. The 76 floats the 60 does
not. Both are IPX7 waterproof.
I bought mine refurbished. Can't tell it from new. All the same
parts and warrantee. If you do get one come back here if you need
help for setting it up. It is very useful but not an easy setup
until you get familiar with it.
You can get a plug from http://www.pfranc.com/ to power it from 12
volts. You get just the plug if you make a pledge to donate some
amount of money. Or you can buy ready made cables from them.
I bought Ram mounts and they work great. I mount it on the handlebar
of the dirt bike and use the beanbag mount for the truck.

Not long ago someone here (60CX or 76SX) corrected me that his or her does
come with detailed map. And since I don't own any of them but reading info
like yours, and many say the 60CX and 76SX family don't come with detailed
map.

From my understanding refurbished has 1 year warrantee like brand new one.
Some store may have different return or exchange policy, but Garmin should
treat them pretty much the same.

Either would probably be a good unit. While they come with a
version of Garmin's BaseMap to get the best out of them you
will need to purchase more detailed maps. For the U.S, and
what you are doing I would recommend that you start with City
Nav North America NT from Garmin. If you are a hardcore dirt
rider then perhaps go with one of Garmin's new 24K topos.
Before you commit though I would suggest that you go to
AdventureRider.com and read in the Laying Down Tracks Forum.
Lots of good info there on the various GPS devices.

Or download any of the free 24k resolution topo maps from
<http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/> . Most of the states are covered now.
Many people like these better than Garmin's own. Browse all their files.
Some specialty trails-only map-overlays have been also submitted.
