does the etrex (vista cx) emit nmea? if so, when it's connected to my
pc (via usb), is there a tool i can use to see nmea sentences? i've
downloaded from gps monitoring apps, but they only see to look at the
com port (though they claim they can also see a gpsr on usb).

There should be an interface setting under setup to allow you to choose NMEA
or Garmin.
Spanner will make a virtual com port. A free download from Garmin. It says
it is for the GPS 18, but I have used it successfully with my 76CS (just for
fun, since it does have an serial output) and others have used it with USB
only units.

I couldn't get it to work with Windows 2000 either.

I can make it work with an old version of Streets and Trips that requires an
nmea stream from a serial port. That is with XP home.
