We happen to be on the road in Wisc over the weekend,
and folks wanted to stop for a snack...

Since the GPS points a straight line to any POI,
wonder how you approach this topic
when driving on the interstate with limited exit points.

ie - the GPS locates a restaurant a mile due east,
but off course there is no way to get to it...

Exactly. Unless in pedestrian mode, the "nearest" anything is at bottom of
next off ramp.
I wonder if any of the programmers ever leave their cubicle ?

Find where you want to eat, touch it so it brings up the detail, push
the big shiny [GO] button. Let the GPS figure out how to get there. It's
not that hard. The programmers put a lot of effort into making the thing
easy to use, but people insist that it must somehow work differently
than it does, then complain about how difficult the thing is.

The programmers should discover what people find easy and do it that way.
It's called making the device user friendly

Yes, but no programmer could make it idiot-proof though... :)
