I've had years of experience with the StreetPilot units and just purchased
an eTrex Venture HC for my wife to use on her jogging expeditions. The
little guy is kinda fun :-)
Sorry if this question has been asked before but I've poked through this
newsgroup, menus on the eTrex, and user's manual and haven't been able to
figure out how to check the firmware version. I like to keep my units up to
date; I notice the most recent version posted on the Garmin website for this
unit is v2.70, Feb 19, 2008 and I imagine my new eTrex is due an update but
don't want to apply it needlessly. How do I find the current firmware
revision?
TIA

On the eTrex Vista HCx, it is Main Menu->Setup (Menu key twice to get
the main menu. Then in Setup Menu->System and the "menu" for the
System Setup page. You should get the software version for the
the main menu. Then in Setup Menu->System and the "menu" for the
unit and the "GPS SW Version" for the MediaTek chipset.

Menus on the Venture HC are apparently different from the Vista HCx
eventually after pressing the "menu" key from enough screens I figured it
out. Thought I had done that but obviously not. Thanks.

Incidentally, the eTrex shipped with firmware version 2.42. Current
revision on the Garmin website is 2.70. I downloaded the file and patched
the eTrex without incident. Kinda like buying a new computer with a Windows
operating system... the first thing it does is spend an hour applying 50 or
60 patches and security updates. :-)
