I just downloaded a map update for my Garmin Nuvi 255,
and have the new map files in Mapsource.

I also have a Nuvi 260.

Is there some way to just buy a map "unlock" code,
and install the same map image from Mapsource to the Nuvi 260 ?
OR -
am I forced to re-download the entire same image all over again
for multiple GPS units.

The map update is only for one GPS. If you want the same update for
another GPS, you have to buy a separate update.

From: http://www8.garmin.com/updatemaps/

nüMaps Onetime
/If you purchase a nüMaps Onetime update you will receive 1 map data update for
1 compatible Garmin product/

Garmin map POIs are integral to the map files--not separate, unlike your
custom POIs.
