I just purchased a 760 and would like to not have to carry all of the
gazillions of chargers that I already have for various devices.
For USB ports, does anyone know what the amperage output is? Is there
anything special about the cylinder mounted along the Garmin USB cable
(capacitor?) that other USB cables cannot provide?
And if I use a wall plug charger, what is the maximum amperage I can use
with a 760?
Thanks

I don't use any third party charger, but I would say 6-12V should be
safed. And if ya wanna be safer then set to 6V wouldn't hurt, I don't
think?
Also, most charger usually max to some MiniAMP. And I be;ieve not long
ago (few days?) someone did post a message about voltage and ampere, but
because I don't care for it so I didn't pay attention to the number.

USB ports are limited to 500 mA (1/2 amp) maximum.
The cylinder on the USB cable is an RF (radio frequency) choke. It's
purpose in life is to block any RF interference generated by the GPS
from being radiated by the cable. It also blocks the FM signal which
will keep the GPS from using the cable as an antenna when you use it's
FM transmitter.
If the 760 is like my 750, the GPS limits it's current draw to 500 mA
when you plug into the USB port. The cradle current draw is 1 amp.
There has been some discussion here in the past about needing a jumper
between two pins on the USB connector to keep the GPS from going into
it's disk drive mode when you plug in a USB connector. I haven't
tried it so I don't know if it will work or not. I do know that my
750 won't work as a GPS if I plug my computer's USB cable into it.
Hope this helps and enjoy your new 760. Check out:

USB connection is always 5 Volt, nothing else.
USB plugs can/may/limited to something like 300-500 mA
Cigar plug is about 12V, ie 10-14 Volt might work

Garmin's wall-plug USB charger is rated at 5vdc, 1.0amp...
