Deciding between the tom tom 730t and the garmin 765t would love to hear
comments from those using these models. I understand from several dealers
that Tom Tom are now very poor on customers service
thanks d........

I got the 765t to replace my Streetpilot 2730. The software options & touch
screen response were 10 times better on my Streetpilot. I didn't get the
Satellite antenna with mine (for a huge discount) so I never got to use the
traffic feature. I didn't like the idea of paying monthly for traffic so it
wasn't that important to me. After several years with the Streetpilot new
features came out that I really wanted that the 765t offers. The features
that I really wanted were life time free traffic, battery operated for
portability, small enough to put in my pocket, memory card slot for as much
music as I want to load and a larger screen. The 765t has all of these but
it also has enough shortcomings to make me want to switch manufacturers
after 10 years with Garmin. The software customization options have been
dumbed down so much that don't enjoy using it. No ability to block certain
roads from my route via the detour like my Streetpilot offers. It has a lot
less choices to choose from on the display. The hundreds of POIs that I have
loaded don't even show up on the 3d map and only when zoomed into 200 feet
on the 2d map. The alert text is so small, I can't read it with no option to
increase the size. The sounds don't announce things that I grew accustomed
to hearing, things such as the POI name or address when I enter them into
the Where To screen. The street detail is much less than the Streetpilot
even on the highest setting (fewer choices to choose from). The worst thing
about the 765t is the touch screen. It often selects choices 1"-2" away from
where I actually press. I have calibrated the screen several times but to no
avail. It is very frustrating when trying to enter an address and I press
"L" and get "Q" instead. It makes it very difficult to find songs on the
music player since I only get one letter to jump to when searching. For
instance, say a song I want to hear starts with "S". I view "all songs",
then ht "Jump". It then brings up the keyboard but the dumb thing is it only
takes on letter, so I press "S". So far so good, I am now at the first song
that starts with "S". I then hit the down arrow in the bottom right corner
3-4 times to scroll through the list when suddenly it misinterprets my press
and chooses one of the songs shown on the screen which then causes it to
immediately start playing that song, usually not the one I want to hear. At
this point I then have to press "Stop" and then "Back" way too many times to
start all over again. That's another soar spot, after getting 5 or 6 screens
into select an option, the only way out is to keep pressing "Back" until you
get back to the main menu, hopefully not selecting something entirely
different in the process. It is so bad that I contacted the place that I
purchased it from (major online store) to get it exchanged. They sent me
replacement unit that was last years model to exchange it with. I tried it
out and the screen seemed to work a little more reliably, but the map
version was from April 2009 and the software version was 2 versions old.
Garmin had a major software bug that often caused the 765t to loose the
system software at which point it will display "System Software Missing" on
the screen until you turn it off. Once you turn it off, it will not turn on
again without sending it back to Garmin for repair. This is what happened to
the replacement 765t. I contacted the vendor again and ordered another 765t
and it experienced the same issue so it is getting ready to go back now. I
still have my original 765t and was just issued an RMA from Garmin allowing
me to send my 1 month old 765t back to them for repair (or exchange) at my
cost for shipping. I was so fed up I looked into offerings from Magellan,
Tom Tom & Navigon. None of them offered the same features as the 765t that I
want. So now I'm stuck sending my new 765t back to Garmin with the hopes
that they will be able to at least make it useable.

Holy crap. Please, don't write EVERYTHING in one paragraph. You don't
expect anyone to read such a huge paragraph, do you?
