I was wondering of the GPS antenna called (GPX 18 by Garmin) work with an
unlocked version of City Navigator NT 2008 similar to what Streets & Trips
2008 does with their software and the included GPS unit that works off the
USB port?

I tried using Garmin's nRoute with the Microsoft GPS and it will not see it
either in a COM port nor USB. It only seems to works with Streets and Trips
software.

I want to use Garmin's map data, but am not too keen on buying another GPS
to work with nRoute. Don't know if their GPX18 requires a unlock to do so.
I'm thinking maybe not since it doesn't seem to lload any maps, just
operates as an antenna.

Tia.

I think you mean the GPS 18, right?

If you have City Navigator installed under MapSource, install the Garmin
free nRoute software, and connect a Garmin GPS receiver that will output
Garmin's proprietary NMEA sentences, it will navigator much like S&T
does. I've not used either S&T or nRoute for actual navigation but I
looked at it a couple of times (using my GPSMAP 76Cx for the GPS input)
and it seems like it would work fine.

Actually, I think the issue was that nRoute would not use the standard
NMEA output from the S&T receiver, it will only use the Garmin
proprietary sentences.

The GPS 18 is sold with MetroGuide which does not require an unlock as I
understand it. The MetroGuide mapping is the same as City Navigator, it
just does not have the capability of uploading autorouting maps to a GPS
receiver.

There is another model of the GPS 18 receiver called the GPS 18 OEM that
does not come with the MetroGuide mapping and it is less expensive. The
GPS 18 OEM can be used in either the Garmin mode or the standard NMEA
mode. So that receiver could be used with either nRoute and your City
Navigator mapping in the Garmin mode or with S&T in the NMEA mode.
Details on the GPS 18 OEM are here:

Switching modes on the GPS 18 OEM is done from the PC desktop using a
utility software.

As a follow up to my reply to your question, I should point out the the
GPS 18 OEM actually comes in three versions. The GPS 18 PC for RS-232
serial, the GPS 18 USB for USB use, and the GPS 18 LVC for hard wired
applications.

Only the GPS 18 PC and the GPS 18 LVC can be used in either Garmin or
NMEA mode. The GPS 18 USB operates only the the Garmin mode.

So the GPS 18 USB would not work with S&T but would work with nRoute.

Garmin tends to keep things complicated and people confused, I am just
trying to share the confusion with you. :>)

Thanks Jack.
I just ordered the GPS 18 USB. I think this will work with nRoute. Too bad
the Miscrosoft unit wouldn't as I've got two of them.

Maybe you can find someone that can use those. That receiver was a
MicroSoft branded Pharos GPS-360 in 2005 and it is probably still that
model or maybe a slightly later version. The style of the housing is
different but the hardware inside is the same.

The GPS-360 was a 12 channel SiRF II receiver and it performed well and
typically for receivers based on that chip set. If you ever need to
find drivers to get that working on another computer try looking for the
Pharos drivers as they will probably work.

Here is an interesting although somewhat dated article comparing the
performance of that receiver with a Magellan Meridian handheld GPS
receiver.
