On rare occasions my wife's Nuvi 265WT just stops talking in the middle of
a trip. Usually it's happened when she's taken some action; i.e. turned
the unit off during a rest stop, gone away from the map display for
another menu during the trip, or the like. Twice on this trip it happened;
and, furiously trying various things we were able to make Jack start
talking again, but we have no idea how we did it.
On the first episode, changing the volume from 90% to 100% made the voice
come back. Shouldn't matter, really, but somehow that's how it worked. On
the second episode, changing the volume did not help. Even went to the
diagnostics and tried the audio diags - "play phrase" came out silent,
though an arbitrary test tone player fine.
For reasons we still can't figure out, Jack returned again.
What did the Garmin Tech have to say?

1. Update firmware (already current).
2. Do full reset and re-enter all favorites, etc (not what you want to
hear on the road, in the middle of a trip).
Try a soft reset instead of a hard reset so you won't loose all of your data.
