I'm at the point of desperation .....
I have a 2007 Street Pilot 7200 which I have continued to update
semi-annually. But I decided it would be nice to download the City
Navigator® North America NT 2010 Map Update. Which I did, saving it as an
unlocked image file.
Directions with the img file say that the image file does NOT need to be
mounted, burned, or opened, Just copy to my garmin device or in the garmin
FOLDER on the SD CARD. Just Use the name: GMAPPROM.IMG for the Primary
mapset or rename to: GMAPSUPP.IMG for the second, and GMAPSUP2.IMG for
the third mapset.
The problem arises when I use Windows Explorer to find a garmin Folder or in
some way recognize the Garmin unit. Nevertheless, I'm able to not only
install the normal updates but can also transfer my own POI files. So what
am I doing wrong????
Thanks!

I'm new to Garmin devices, so please forgive me if I misunderstand your
situation.
I tried to download the "City Navigator® North America NT 2010 Map Update"
which was a file named garmin_rmu_cnnant2011_10.exe. If I understand
correctly, it is only necessary to execute the file while the powered Garmin
device is connected to the computer with the Garmin USB drivers installed,
and the installation will occur as a result.
Do I understand correctly that your mapset update is "filename.img" ? What
size is it please? The exe file is 2,331,729,785 bytes (2.17 GB)

The image file is 1.3 GB and it will simply replace the .img file that was
installed initially. Right now that transfer is underway so it too early
know for sure. Fortunately, since I have a late model Street Pilot, it will
accept the NT format whereas the earlier models (cited above) will not.
The simple reason why the computer wasn't recognizing the gps drive was
because I didn't have the gps powered up and set on Mass Storage.
