Garmin's web site shows a download for the installable program called
Web Update -- to keep our software current. However, is there any
difference between that and the my.garmin.com site where you plug in
your device and it tells you of any updates? Using the site doesn't
involve any installation programs except for a small communicator program.

pretty much the same...
except with WebUpdater
you can click on a link to see what is being updated,
which brings up the webpage you have seen elsewhere.
Also, only the firmware is updated and you can control
what other "optional" areas are updated, like "voices", etc
whereas with the MyGarmin web page -
it does everything behind the scenes
and there is no link listing what is being updated.
BTW - just so you are not confused on another point,
these updates DO NOT update the map or points of interest,
only the operating firmware, voices, etc -

Thanks for the info on WebUpdater and the my.garmin page differences.
Can you bear one more?
Oooops, never mind. I'm going to start a new thread with this one,
involving routing anomalies.

It's pretty much the same. But since Garmin releases their Web Updater,
they don't update their web page (the download area) up-to-date like used
to.
IOW, if you look for newer firmware or software of some model then you may
not fint it/them there but only through WebUpdater
