Hi,

I was going to get a garmin gps 60csx for occasional long distance
driving and off route hiking. However I also need a cell phone, and I
read that the GPS on the iphone is quite accurate.

Seeing as how the garmin costs 350 + more money for maps am I correct
in thinking I'm way better off with the iphone for my driving/hiking
needs? I know it doesn't have all the features of a garmin, but as
long as it can give accurate lat/long coordinates and record your path
as you hike, it would be pretty ideal. That and of course it can do a
bunch of stuff the garmin can't.

Thnx.

Many phones have GPS and map capabilities. The Iphone
doesn't have the typical "hiking" style maps I don't
believe. Nor does it do moving map GPS stuff, or at least it
didn't used to.

Whay are you comparing the Iphone to the 60CSX? Price? There
are much less expensive GPS units that will surpass the
abilities of the GPS in the Iphone for a LOT less money. You
won't be able to make phone calls though.

You could buy a Garmin NuviPhone too.

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind.

The iphone might be OK for driving, but I'm not sure about hiking.
What's the battery life like on the iphone with GPS on? And the iphone
isn't waterproof - how long would it survive in typical hiking
conditions? I know you can get waterproof cases and external batteries
etc, but that's more faff and bulk.
Whereas with the Garmin you can just carry a couple of spare AAs.

And why the Garmin 60csx? Something like the Legend HCx is quite a bit
cheaper, and with nearly all of the same features. Or maybe the Dakota
10/20?
Or if you just want to record tracks and get coordinates, there's even
cheaper options, eg the basic yellow etrex or Geko 201.

And there are free maps available for the Garmins (depending on where in
the world you are, and what sort of maps you want).

I'm no familiar with the Legend, is it as good at holding sat. reception
as he Garmin? I have the 76CSx and frequently am in some very dense
canopy situations.About the only time I've lost sat. reception is in a
parking garage.

The legend is a Garmin unit, and yes it has good satellite
reception , and surely better than an Iphone. Probably not
as good as the 76csx and 60csx, but very good. At least mine
did. Don't have one anymore.
