I wanted to bring to everyone's attention the following (potentially
dangerous) oddity -
Where To = 1200 Getty Center Dr, Los Angeles, 90049
It resulted in these jumbled routing directions from my location:
1. Take Exit 3A on right to I-405N towards Sacramento
2. Take Exit 57A on right to Sunset Blvd
3. Turn Left on Sunset Blvd
4. Turn right on Barrington Ave
5. Turn left on Barrington Ave (huh??)
6. Turn right on Saltair Ave
7. Keep right on Norman Pl
8. Turn right on Chalon Rd
9. Arrive at The Getty Center on left
Normally, I would simply take the Getty Center Dr. exit from I-405N
and make only a couple of turns to enter the Getty Center. This is
exactly the routing I get in Mapsource software. But for some reason
on my Garmin 1490T device itself it gives such a convoluted route
which, if you know the Hollywood hills area, is a thick mesh of tiny
narrow residential streets that are VERY DANGEROUS to negotiate even
with GPS guidance. (BTW- Google Map gives me the long route too, but
not as bad as the Garmin)
I wonder if someone could duplicate this on their Garmin models, or is
it peculiar only to the 1490T.
Also - I have tried changing the routing preference (fastest,
shortest, eco, etc.). All gave same result.
Don't worry about it. The "brain" in these GPS units isn't as smart
as the human's. Whenever I want to drive to the Indianapolis airport
from my home, my 760 always wants me to get off the interstate roads
and take some surface streets once I get into the Indianapolis area.
Not the right answer, obviously, even though I have fastest travel
time set. It might be a couple tenths of a mile shorter, but getting
off and hitting stoplights sure isn't faster.
These things are far from perfect. Sometimes you just have to
overrule them and usually their auto-recalculation process eventually
catches up. Whenever mine goes off on its own tangent, I just use it
as a moving map display until it figures out that I'm smarter than it
is and gets back in sync with where I want to go.

You need to check you settings. Are they set to avoid traffic for
example, or certain other detures. Check them, mine were set wrong at
one time, you would not believe the routes it took me.
