My Nuvi 2360LMT arrived today.
I expected to use it like I do with my StreetPilot; i.e. copy maps to
MapSource, create routes in mapsource and copy them back to GPS, etc.

The software recognizes the hardware, and can copy a map, but the only
map segment that got copied was some place in Kansas where Garmin Tech
Support lives.

Supposedly the GPS is pre-loaded with North America maps. Why don't they
all copy over to MapSource?

I haven't actually taken the GPS for a car ride yet, so I can't comment
on that. It just seems quite limited when it's connected to the
computer. It will not show me a map screen at that time.

Nüvis are much more autonomous beasties than StreetPilots were, largely
due to the stunning amount of processor and storage available to them.
There's more memory than almost anyone's ever going to use available for
maps, enough horsepower to make building routes on the device nearly as
easy as it is to do on a desktop machine.

only reasonable as it encourages others to do so. However, the offer
is good one time only. If they want me to spare them again, they'd
better save my life again. --Peter Anspach's Evil Overlord list

I'm not questioning the power and storage capabilities.
But planning a trip by creating routes on the GPS just is not practical.
For me, that process also includes planning on the big screen and
printing the map with waypoints - no way to do that from the GPS.

Are you saying there is no way to get those maps onto my computer for
MapSource to use?

Hmm, I do it all the time, but I guess I'll stop, now that I know it's
not practical. ;-)

Actually, what I do is get the big picture by looking at Google maps
on the PC. I decide which cities I want to visit or spend the night
in, then I go to the Nuvi and build a route using those cities. It's
fast, easy, and foolproof. With all of the hassles I keep reading of
using MapSource and issues with trying to maintain the integrity of a
route while transferring it to the GPS, I think I'll stick with my
way. It's easy and it works every time.

I don't print maps, and my waypoints are built into the route right on
the Nuvi.

I guess you would benefit from discerning which messages are from
fumble-fingered types, and which ones are not.

I have never had a "hassle" with transferring routes from MapSource to
StreetPilot, and I do this for every major trip we take.
