Hi

I owe a Zumo550 with Europe NT City guide installed per default.
On a SD-Card I bought additionally the Northern America NT map.

So I have the europe map inside my unit and can plug in additional
the North America map on SD-card.

What about the upgrade feature.

I have the possibility to buy an upgradefeature during livetime
of my unit for roundabout 100 Euros. Its a subscription to the
garmin map upgrade. They say on theyr website this upgrade
includes all SW "on my unit".

OK. I understand how it works with the installed SW
You download the newer SW into the unit, the SW will be
upgraded an thats it.

But how can this work with my North America maps on the SD?
How can I upgrade this SD-Card located SW?

Or is a SW on SD card not upgradeable via download with the
upgrade feature?

Or is it possible to upgrade the SD-card map when it is plugged
in the unit?

Best regards from Stuttgart

for the sake of non-German readers I'll reply in English :-)

Garmin's life update applies to only ONE set of maps per unit. That
means you can buy a life update for your City Navigator Europe set and
install it on your PC aand your unit.

I don't know how/if this works with your SD card. Maybe someone else can
shed some light on this matter.

OK. But this is not clear for me.
My "set of maps" is Europe internal AND North America on SD.
This is in fact a "set of maps", isn't it? :-)

If Garmin wants that I subscribe to this "~100 Euro Abonnement"
they should very clearly explain what a "set" is.

I don't own Zumo550 to know much about it.

Is it nice to have flexible unit, isn't it?

You can have maps of all 7 continents if you wish

I don't buy the lifetime upgrading, but it's sure nice to have.

It's pretty much default, and I belive it may be possible to download to
external memory too. As I mention I don't have lifetime upgrading, but I
have upgraded newer maps before and I always installed newer map on
*external* memory card.

You have me little confused here, and it would help if you read text
message once awhile to understand the basic of how Garmin GPS works.

- With Garmin's special SD-MAP you CAN'T copy or write to it. It's
PROTECTED.

- *If* it's a regular memory card, and you want to install multiple maps to
it then you will need to

        a. Install the MAPs on computer

        b. Run MapSource

        c. Select all *or* whatever block of ONE *or* MORE *installed* MAP. It's
limited by number of blocks so you may have to Google for more detail
                 info.

        d. After you have blocks of all the MAPS you want, then tell MapSource to
transfer to either *internal* or *external* memory card. I would
                 prefer External Memory card

First, there are 2 types of SD card (1) Garmin special protected SD-MAP
card (2) regular SD memory card. And I don't think anyone else besides you
know exactly what you have. But above you mention you *bought* the SD-MAP
then I guess it means the special protected SD-MAP.

In this case then NO, you can't write to the protected SD card.

> Or is it possible to upgrade the SD-card map when it is plugged

*If* you mean the regular SD memory card then YES, you can

- Upgrading directly to the regular memory card. I'm pretty sure is has the
option.

- Inserting the memory card with whatever map installed to Garmin GPS. Go
to the setting (Map Info I believe) then select *ONE* map (no more than one)
from the list, and you are all set to go.

IOW, if you are in Europe then select the Europe map. When you are in
America then *switch* to America map.

Hi Joel

Until now, I have only the garmin special protected SD-MAP Card.

Question is:
How can I copy the Map from the special protected Garmin SD Card
to an regualr card? Please give me a hint.
Next question:
If I am able to copy the Map from this special protected card to
a regular SD writable SD Card how can I test if it works, without having
the Download-abonnement?
Is it written somewhere that it works in that way on the garmin page?
I did not found something.

Regards
BGE
