After 2 years of using my 260 I realize I need a new map for my 260.
An upgrade would cost me APPRPOX. $80.00, a new unit would cost..????
All I need is a road map of this country USA, I would prefer not to have any
of the other garbage included, in other words I want a bare bone quality
Garmin G.P.S.
Should I just invest in an upgrade map ? or should I look for another unit ?
and if I should look for another unit which model would do best for me.
Don't need anything but a road map...no photo's, no bluetooth, no music, no
cam, no nothing except a map for the U.S.
Free, current maps are available at

I'm not being a wise-guy, but how can someone some group supply free maps
for a specific device ? I'm not complaining, just curious.
Link says: "With a new Garmin device simply create a folder called "Garmin"
on your SD-card and store the .img file in it". " a NEW Garmin device"?
Would you know ... does theirs REPLACE the factory one - forever ? as in
'wipe it out'? Or just run from SD card ?
Do they include POI's, etc like factory ?
Thanks very much for the pointer/ any further info

I have no interest in other map so I don't know what the free map above
may have that CN doesn't. But I think it's pretty normal for someone or
some company to give somnething free, may be for some years until they no
longer have the time to conitnue.
1. Garmin has 2 different .IMG MAPs "gmapSUPP.img" and "gmapPROM.img"
a. "gmapPROM.img" is the original map comes with the GPS, and it's in the
folder of GPS unit.
b. "gmapSUPP.img" is the UPGRADED map or the map you installed later, or
the one you have in external memory card
I've never tried to upgrade directly to the internal memory so I don't
know if the upgrade will be "PROM" or "SUPP" so if you want to know then you
either look at your Garmin GPS (if you have already upgraded to internal
memory) then share the information with us, or GOOGLE for more detail.
2. So, in order to have Garin detects both original "PROM" and "SUPP" from
external memory card, you will have to name the one on external memory
""gmapSUPP.img" and place it in a specific folder (I believe GARMIN is the
right one for all Garmin GPSes)
3. If they don't say it will come with POI then the chance is NO. and POI
has nothing to do with the MAP but an addional option.
4. *IF* you have the map installed or COPIED to correct folder and name, and
the map is Garmin supported then your Garmin should detect it, and will
display more than one map options for you to chose.
I don't know what GPS you have, and I don't have time to go through the
MENUs to find out exactly step-by-step how to get to the option. But if you
click on the "MAP INFO" then it will display how many map available as well
as version etc.. and you have option to CHECK which map you wanna use.
IOW, you can have MORE THAN ONE MAP... or you can have the factory map and
other MAPs if you wish.

OpenStreetMap is free because the maps are mapped by the general public

using GPS traces and then submitted to the OpenStreetMap server, (this is
just like the Wikipedia encyclopedia, but for maps), the maps are then
converted by volunteers to run on Garmin devices. I plotted all the streets,
footpaths, and recreation areas for my local town and entered them onto the
OpenStreetMap server, as in the UK, copyright on official UK maps does not
permit copying for other uses, but apparently in the US, copying of
Government maps appears to be acceptable, so the US is probably fully
covered. In the UK, OpenStreetMaps can be a bit patchy though, due to the
reliance on contributors to plot and submit the maps.
