I bought my 265T last fall (2008) and in January 2009 ( I think) I updated
the firmware and the map got updates to 2009 version. After that I tried to
update and I forget the exact message , but got the impression that "You
already got one free map update". I thought that I'd get updates for 12
months from purchase, not just "the next version" 3 months later and -
that's it.
Maybe I have the latest:
City Navigator North AM NT 2009
but I was wondering are there updates to each year ( patches) or is there
just 2009 , then 2010, 2011 etc.
Thanks

Garmin, AFAIK, never gave you more than one free update upon

within 60 days of the unit first acquiring a GPS position.
I just bought a new 765T and upon registering it, I was promptly told
that my map was outdated and they gave me a link to download the current
2010.3. The process was totally painless and I'm good to go.

Nope, current version is 2010.3
I think the annual updates changed both in designation and number of
releases when Garmin rolled out their lifetime map subscription. 2010
series NT maps have been available since early this year. I just
downloaded and installed the 2010.3 update.

Other people have recently mentioned 2010.10 and 2010.20. It's a bit
confusing if 2010.3 is newer than those, unless by chance 2010.3 is
the same as 2010.30?

Thanks. That what I suspected.
Mine doesn't show a decimal just 2009 - so that would be 2009.1 ?
I know they don't care, but I don't think that it's right. The buyer is not
told the pros/cons of waiting to register. I used my GPS for a month before
I connected it to Garmin online. I was soon on a trip and it updated. I
thought - great - it does it aromatically : thinking that it would continue
to do so for 12 months.
I look at it this way: a buyer buys it in January and pays $225 and
registers - gets one update ( to 2009.2) while someone else that bought it
and did NOT connect online until 6 months - or someone later buys one for
$150 ( getting outdated) - gets an updated map ( 2010.2 perhaps).
It should be that the user gets updates for 12 months and not penalized for
maybe registering a day before an update. Perhaps it's one bit in the code
and once updated that's it, but I don't like it. When I read that I was
entitled to the 2009 update in 2008, I assumed that meant "next years' " and
not a newly named update ( like you said- the 2010 map is up to version 3
and it's still 2009 !)
Flame off.
Thanks for the info.

why does everyone think they are entitled to everything ! for free !
Garmin is being nice -
you bought the GPS - when you turn it on and acquires the satellites,
that date is recorded in the GPS as the start date.
Garmin then - when you connect online in a reasonable time period -
will offer to update the unit to the current map as of the "start date" -
NOT an ongoing service,
but rather to ensure your device has the most current map
in case it was sitting on the store shelf longer compared to some other
units.
