When I updated the maps in my wife's new Nuvi, I carefully selected a
unique directory so as to not lose my CNNA2008 (current for the
Quest). I failed.
What is required to have unique installations for different units?
I don't think it allow you to be too careful. Or in general it doesn't
work the way some owners really want. It goes like this.
- When upgrade MAP or POI the older will be *replaced* with newer.
- Map, POI, and others are hardcoded to specific folder, or the GPS won't
see it if you put in different folder.
- Garmin GPS (Nuvi for example) usually have around 1.x to around 2GB of
internal memory which is just about enough for SINGLE Map Data. And Garmin
software is not smart enough to come up with the solution to overcome the
Not Enough Space issue many people have. I never upgraded to internal
memory to have personal experience.
Now back to the MAIN issue.
- If you want to keep the original then BACKUP (or just COPY) the map from
internal memory to hard drive, or DVD.
- *If* you have large external memory (8GB for example) then you can always
COPY or RENAME the older one. Or you can install more than one copy to
different folder.
> What is required to have unique installations for different units?
You mean installing same map to multiple Garmin GPSes?
- You can install to any GPS you wish *but* only GPS with the registered Key
will work, or others won't.
- *unless* the map has *universal key* (Garmin used to offer univeral key)
or hacked version, else One Map Per Garmin GPS.

I communicate poorly.
I own a Quest I which has "small" map storage. For it, I own CNNA2008
which allows my selecting regions and loading those (selectively with
POIs) into my unit. I frequently change the loaded maps ... 8 or 10
times a year.
I bought a Nuvi for my wife. When I logged on to register it, I was
eligible for Garmin's 1 free update (to CNNANT2010.4, fwiw). I
accomplished this update. I put the update in a different directory
so as to not lose the ability to use the 2008 files on the Quest.
When I open Mapquest ... OOPS, I am wrong. The pulldown lets me
select CNNA2008 instead.
SORRY.

Now you have me confused, cuz thing should go like these.
1. If you try to install to the *internal* memory then the internal memory
has just enough space for ONE full map. Of course if you only select part
of the whole map then you should be able to install *parts* of several
different Map Data
2. At the current, Garmin will give you a *free* upgrade to current map
within 60 days. But *if* you don't register right away then you still be
able to get the free map after 60 days.
3. The MAP will only work with SINGLE GPS base on the Unit #'s (I dunno
about the newer model but the older has around 25 numbers).
4. Now back to the different folder, as I have mention
a. *If* you use external memory card which has more than enough space for
more than one full map, then you can rename current folder, then upgrade the
latest map to the Default Folder.
b. *If* you are talking about rename the folder of the internal memory,
then I am afraid it won't have enough space left for another map. Or the
internal memory is around 2GB, and each full map is about 1.3GB-1.6GB or so
(I never looked but guessing).
c. Now *if* you have much larger memory card (like 8GB or 16GB) which has
more than enough space for several full maps, including the TOPO maps. BUT
the map will be limited by the number of BLOCK, so even you have more than
enough space, you still have to face the BLOCK limiation.
I don't remember the exact number but I read someone mentioned around
2,xxx blocks (and someone gave an updated with more block).
BTW, since you have been changing the map 8-10 times a years then you
probably know lot more about upgrading than I do as I have only tested few
times just for some personal knowledge.

It sounds like you are talking about *External Memory* here? if so then
it's the way how it works.
And if you install multiple Map Datas then Garmin will combine ALL the
maps (blocks) into single file, and it will display multiple maps on GPS
screen for you to select which one you want to use. Example, some people
use the same GPS for "campting/hunting/hiking" then they may use "TOPO", for
"fishing, boating" then they may use some type of fishing or marine map, and
for most people who use for "mobile" then they use City Navigator.
And you can install multiple types of map on the GPS, then switch to
whatever map you need. And Garmin GPS will display maps from both Internal
and Extermal memory.

I think you mean, if you don't register right away, or even if you
don't register at all, you still have a maximum of 60 days in which to
get a free map upgrade, if such an upgrade exists. Failing to register
doesn't extend the period.
