You could have taken the Tappan Zee and the wait may have only been 2H 55M

From May to September, the best time to hit the GW on a Sunday night is
midnight or later.

All routing by GPS or on line takes me over the GWB through the Bronx on
the way to Boston (from 07410) to visit grandson. We always take the
Garden State north to the Tappan Zee, then go east to the Merritt Pkway.
We tried different routes, but this is the best unless there is clear
indication to not take the Merritt (which some people abhor).

Take the TZ bridge. Follow to rt 684 north to 84. Take 84 to 90 and
straight into Boston. I've made the trip probably 200 times and there is no
really "good" way.

That's another way, but I really dislike 84 between 684 and Hartford. I'll
take the construction on 287 East towards the Merritt, and the much
improved Merritt (compared to 20-30 years ago).

Thanks folks. I WAS gonna include that " I usually take the TappanZee but
there was a major accident and it was backed up for hours forcing me thru
the city " (according to my 265T) , but thought that the reader would think
: 'who cares?'

I live near Boston and on my GPS I have quite a few spots saved as Favorites
so when leaving on a major trip I go:
From - Home
To " Nyack" ( TappanZee)
then
To 'last gas fill on NJ turnpike' ( Delaware is about $1 more per gallon)
( I save the cheap gas places as favorites - keyword gas)
then
To Lorton , VA etc

I would mention one thing about that though.
When I first got GPS I saved a favorite in middle on TappanZee as we headed
to FLA. On way home I chose it as a waypoint and as I approach northern NJ I
could see that it was going to route me THRU NYC and then I realized - my
FAVORITE was WESTbound on the TappanZee and from NJ the fastest/ most direct
route was thru the city. NOW I go "Via Nyack" so that I'm on the Westbound
side of the bridge.
