When driving around I see these shoebox-sized devices mounted on poles
pointing at the traffic lanes. They seem to have opaque fronts, so I don't
think they are cameras, but what are they, what do they measure, and how do
they work? I don't know what their trade name is and haven't been able to
find anything specific about them with an internet search. I did find an
article about how traffic info is collected and shared that was interesting
and led me to traffic.com(which is Navteq).
Is this the same traffic data that is used by our Garmin GPS's?
Here's the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/14/us/14traffic.html

Trafficmaster is used in the UK. I suspect Floyd is in the USA (although he
doesn't say) so perhaps they are getting round to copying the UK traffic
monitoring system??

Trafficmaster of course merely monitors the average vehicle speed and does
not identify the vehicles it "sees". (Although it can be quite revealing to
look on a website and see an average vehicle speed of 65+ in a 50mph speed
limit!!)

Other than being rectangular, that blue cartoon-looking thing isn't much
like what I see. The ones around Tampa Florida are clean neat little boxes
with no accessory items.
