The unit itself has to TRANSMIT the realtime status/l.ocation data to some
SERVICE.
That's all part of a normal cellphone... but not a normal GPS unit.
A tracking GPS will merely have a log to show where the unit has been - not
realtime -

As I mentioned in another posting,
if the OP is a hiker as he mentioned,
then a suggested product is called SPOT.... a Personal Locator Beacon
which has all 3 elements as required...
1 - GPS location determined
2 - transmit realtime info to low earth orbit sats
3 - relay that data via the SPOT service

You have to ignore the "subject"
and find out what the actual intended usage is....
basically - survival SOS -
but didn't ask that question in the original posting.

ok on that tracking service needed..

am familiar with SPOT .. seems to be a cheaper form of Epirb... I used to do a
lot of offshore fishing when I had my boat... :)
