Is there a way to track a moving Garmin unit from the home computer?
You can do that with many cell phones.

Since a GPS receiver is a passive receiving device, I'm guessing the
answer is no.

Think about what you're suggesting, please ... by "a moving Garmin unit" one
presumes a GPS receiver of some sort.
How is that unit going to transmit in realtime any data about its current
position to your "home computer"?

nope - as common sense indicates - it's just a "receiver" -

- just for your info....
it can't tell you where the other person is "going right now",
or keeping tabs on them...
but some models do have a "log" or "track"
which can be downloaded from the GPS after they get home
and you connect the GPS via USB.

When I gave my initial 'no' answer last night, I was thinking in terms
of the Nuvi, since that's what I have. But what about the more full
featured units like the 60-series and 76-series, which have an NMEA
output? I believe you can get real-time position data from that port,
which could be piped into a computer application that uploads it to a
server. At the other end, another person could download the data and
thereby track the GPS unit. In theory, anyway.
