I just bought a Nuvi 270. After registering it (a very unpleasant
experience), I find that the Europe map database is two years out of date
(2006) and Garmin wants $130 to update it!
What kind of company is Garmin anyway?
Does anyone from Garmin ever read/participate in these newsgroups?
I sent feedback to the support group, but I don't have very high
expectations as to the results.

Don't get upset until you get the final answer. They updated my map for
free and they may for you.
Where did you buy the unit? Don't blame Garmin because the seller had a unit
sitting on his shelf unsold for over a year. That is no different than
buying a two year old can of peas at the grocery store because they did not
rotate stock.

Edwin,
Thanks for the reply. I bought it from NewEgg, a reputable source, in my
opinion.
I hope you're right, and if so, I will be sure to post that good news here.
I have sent their tech support a couple of critical emails tonight.
We'll see their response.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Garmin Intl. Don't be surprised if they
don't answer your emails. I have sent several that have been unanswered.
If they grant your free maps upgrade, your problems have just started. Do
you know that you need Mapsource and all of the unlock codes setup to
transfer the map data. I had to clear my registery of all Garmin references
and start over to finally to get Mapsource to install properly. After that
you might have trouble transferring the map data because of USB chipset
problems between your computer and the nuvi. I have just been through this
whole Garmin nightmare with my Nuvi 760. Two months and I finally have City
Maps 2009 installed internally. Their website has crashed frequently while
I have been connected to it. The map data takes a very long time to
download. Telephone support is a long drawn out affair that can have
several 30 minute waits between support persons (hardware vs. software).
Good luck. It can happen it just takes a very long time.

Jacques,
Thanks for the reply, even if it's bad news.
I've been reading this newsgroup and other sources to see if I really
need/want Mapsource, and how best to get it.
I have Mappoint, but it appears to require a serial cable ("COM port")..how
quaint, and expensive.
The cheapest serial cable I've seen is over $30..too much for 'playing
around'.
I'll post any updates on this 'adventure' as I get them.
