Garmin tech support sent me some files to run that were supposed to
bring the unit back but the tech who was working with me missed a
critical step in having me apply a Region file so the unit came back
up but had NO map. By no map I mean that when I viewed the map by
selecting View Map there was a triangle (default vehicle) shown on the
screen with no underlying map with streets and such. And when I
selected Tools/Settings/Map the Map Info button was greyed out and
could not be selected to see which map and version was loaded. I then
used WebUpdater and found that the region was missing. After
downloading and installing the file recommended by WebUpdater I had
the same results above which required another call back in to Tech
Support and another 45 minute wait on hold. Incredibly I ended up with
the very same tech on the line who had me try several other things
before finally deciding to transfer me to the Software Support
department. Another 40 minute wait on hold and I got a guy who took
over control of my PC, wiped the GPS clean, re-installed the system
files and then had me update with the last map. All-in-all the entire
process took more than 6 hours with the majority of that on hold or
talking to Garmin tech support.

Somehow my unit lost its system files overnight while sitting in the
vehicle since it was used the day prior and the next morning when it
was powered on it said the system files were missing. It should also
be noted that when I connected the unit to the PC and looked at the
files and folders there were 22 files and/or folders on the root level
and 19 of them were completely unrecognizable by the characters which
appeared. They had names like *(l}"J$E$#$##jj.*^! and others which
could not be read. Needless to say I have now done a complete backup
as has been suggested by others in this thread so that I hopefully
NEVER have to go through that HELL again.

Excellent point and one that I will be employing immediately. I don't
know why I hadn't thought of or done that already and it would have
saved me a huge headache.
