...shows up to five green bars on satellite lock depending on signal
strength. When searching for satellites though, the bars are sometimes just
hollow outlines while other times they are red.
Any idea on what red vs. hollow represents?

The bars are clear, but I don't think the explanation is :-)
Here's my *interpretation*.
1. Bars are filled in if active and hollow if not. Thus a signal strength
of three out of five will show the first three bars as colored and the last
two as clear.
2. When a satellite has been processed successfully, the colored bars are
green.
3. If a satellite signal has been only tentatively processed, its colored
bars are red.
4. Maybe one red bar is used to signify a signal strength of zero (that's
my guess; some day I'll try to see what my 350 does).

I believe that red bars indicate the GPS doesn't have current almanac

or ephemeris data while hollow bars indicate that the GPS has a
current satellite almanac but not current ephemeris data. A satellite
almanac will allow the GPS computer to select which satellites to
download ephemeris data from first but will not allow it to locate its
position on the globe. After the GPS has ephemeris data from 4
satellites, the bars should turn part green and the GPS should be able
to locate its position with reduced accuracy. More is better but I
don't know at what point the computer decides it has enough to reach
its rated accuracy and turns all the bars green.
If I'm wrong about any of the above, I'm sure someone will point out
my errors. Please.

Three responses, three different answers:
I think red bars indicates that it has acquired some satelite signal,
but not enough to calculate a position yet, whereas all clear/hollow
indicates that the unit has not yet acquired any satellite signals.
Green means that enough signal has been acquired to calculate its
current position. And the amount of bars that are filled in, either
red or green, indicates the current quality of the signal (as done on
basically any radio device that shows signal strength).

If you press on the bars for a short time it will display a sky view
where you can see all the satellites and signal strengths etc...
