I have not updated the firmware on my Garmin Legend since around
2004-2005. Same for my legal version of Mapsource Topo. My current
status is:
Legend firmware: v. 3.40
Mapsource: v. 6.11.5
Can I gain any utility from upgrading? If so, what might I gain? I
worry about losing what I have to get something I don't need, or
can't
use.
The threads I've read, recently, seem to complain about updates
actually downgrading current functionally. Is that true?

Yes and No, in general the firmware is to either fix some known bug or
improve something, and sometime Garmin or manufacture may just release a
newer firmware for different thing. So
- If you are happy with the current, don't have any problem with the current
then you should be ok with the current
- If you don't like the current, or don't mind to play along with Garmin
then upgrading your to the current see how it works out for you.
The MapSource, I really don't know what Garmin is trying to do with the
MapSource, because it's so sicken weird.
- In the past several years, they don't inclue MapSource or any Map Data
with newer Garmin GPSes. So, I don't know what's a good idea to release
bugs fixed version when most owners can't use, or don't have original
MapSource to use the upgrade version.
- Not only that I read so many problems with so many newer versions, I read
that one of the reason Garmin releases newer MapSource not because they want
to add more bug, fixing newer bug, inproving the same old things have been
around for decade, but they release newer version to deal with the HACKER.

Well, *if* you believe what you read then it's true, if you don't then it
ain't true. I can't answer this question unless you tell me if you believe
me or not.
