Hi Folks,

Using a Garmin 76csx and CityNav 7, I've created many routes in my local
area. If I enter and follow a route from it's beginning, it will direct me
correctly to my destination.

The problem is, if I enter a route at any point other than the it's
beginning, the software will continually try to take me back to the start of
the route rather than my destination.

I've been using GPS for a long time and with earlier units, when you entered
a route at any point other than the start, the unit would guide you to the
destination from the point at which you entered.

Anyone have an idea as to how to work around this? What setting am I
missing?

Thank You,

Kevin

Once you start the route, you can do a 'menu-recalculate' to get a new
route from your current position.

If you are on the route, you might be able to press "out" to go to the next
route point along the route.

I tried that in the past and when I recalculated the route (a point to
point marine route, Follow Road in Garmin speak) it wanted to go
directly to the last waypoint in the route. Without regard for the
intervening peninsula that the other waypoints would have taken me around.

I found that if you set the Off Road Transition setting to Auto (not to
Manual or Distance), it will let you enter the route as you want and
pick up the route at the nearest logical waypoint and proceed to the end
via the remaining waypoints.

The Off Road Transition setting is found from the Routes page. Press
Menu, highlight Off Road Transition, press Enter, choose Auto, and press
Enter again.

Kevin,

If you can, please tell me what your setting was for Off Road Transition
when you are having the problem and if changing it to auto solved the
problem. There is still some confusion about this behavior amongst some
of us and I'm not sure but what the behavior you are seeing might not
relate to the Off Road Transition setting in combination with another
setting.

The Off Road Transition setting from the Routes menu is *not* the one of
the settings from the Routing menu on the Setup page. The similarity of
the names of the settings see to create further confusion. On my part
at least.

Hi Jack,
I'm not sure what you're asking. The 'Off Road Transition' setting within
the 'Routes Menu' is set to 'Auto', but I'm not using the unit 'Off Road'.
Does this setting influence GPS routing when navigating 'On Road'?

The use of the Follow Road and Off Road option controlled by another
preference setting. I think the default setting is that it will use
Follow Road and not ask you which you want to use. So if your go to
Routing on the Setup page, you can change that setting.

Press Menu, Menu, choose Setup, press Enter

Highlight Routing, press enter,

Choose Guidance Method, press Enter,

Choose Prompted, press Enter, then press Quit to get back to navigation.

The Follow Road method means it will default to following the road
vectors on the base map (or supplemental mapping if turned on) instead
of proceeding directly from one waypoint to another.

I use the following settings on the Routing menu:

Guidance Method - Prompted
Follow Road Method - Faster Time
Next Turn Pop-up - On

Follow Road Options (high light and press Enter to see)

Off Route Recalculation - Prompted
Calculation Method - Best Route
Calculate Routes For - Car/Motorcycle
Avoid - Unpaved Roads

When I use my 76Cx on the road, if I'm going to be doing it for some
time, I'll change the Off Route Recalculation setting back from Prompted
to Auto so I don't have to make the choices and press buttons while I am
driving and get off route. But otherwise, it is best if you decide it
on a case by case basis if you are using both Follow Road and Off Road
routes.

I posted a link to a text file with my default settings a while back and
someone found it helpful for getting a better feeling for all the
various preferences and options settings for these receivers:
